Montgomery Canal Triathlon
Starts at 20/05/2023 09:30am till 20/05/2023 05:30pm
At Hafan ry Afon
Organised by Friends of Montgomery Canal
The 2023 Montgomery Canal Triathlon on 20th May will be the 11th – one of the biggest events to take place on or near the canal. The Triathlon is organised by the Friends of the Montgomery Canal and is supported by the Canal & River Trust in aid of the restoration of the Montgomery Canal. It is one of the most popular cross border events, starting in Newtown in Wales and ending in Shropshire.
This annual event has had several formats since it started in 2012. Most recently, it has been a special ‘marathon’ length of about 27 miles, owing to restoration works on the canal. In 2023, the Triathlon will have a format similar to 2022 but, owing to new restoration works, will be slightly longer at about 28½ miles – but still a special ‘marathon’ length.
The Triathlon starts at Hafan yr Afon in Newtown for the 12-mile cycling section to Belan. It will include three major and two minor road crossings where the canal was blocked after it was closed.
Then there will be 5½ miles by canoe to Pool Quay, through 2 locks, followed by 11 miles on foot to the finish at Morton (with two more road crossings at blockages on the A483 and two at minor roads). The finish at Morton is about 1½ miles further than the 2022 finish at Schoolhouse Bridge, Crickheath, which will be a restoration construction site!
This is a great day out for families with children as well as experienced triathletes. All entrants who complete a section will receive a commemorative medallion made from local slate.
