Council Tax, introduced in the UK in 1992 to replace the unpopular Community Charge is used by local authorities to fund local services. Each property in Wales is placed into one of 9 bands ranging from A to I, based on it’s valuation as of 2003.

In Newtown, your council tax bill is made up of:

  • Powys County Council,
  • Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council, and
  • Dyfed Powys Police and Crime Commissioner

In 2021-2022, residents in a Band D property in Newtown paid the following:

  • Powys County Council – £1,404.26
  • Newtown Town Council – £177.55
  • Dyfed Powys Police – £275.56
  • Total – £1,857.37

The current proposals for council tax, for a Band D property in Newtown for 2022-2023 are as follows:

  • Powys County Council – £1,459.03 (Increase of £54.77 – proposed 3.9% increase)
  • Newtown Town Council – £178.54 (Increase of £0.99 – approved increase)
  • Dyfed Powys Police – £290.16 (Increase of £14.60 – proposed 5.3% increase)
  • Total – £1,927.73 (Increase of £70.36 per year)
