Thieves have broken into the town’s new bike hub and stolen three ‘FUJI – Le Absolute’ bicycles after the hub was vandalised.

The hub, operated by Open Newtown, can be used to store bikes while residents and visitors are in the town centre.

It is understood the bike hub was broken into sometime on Bank Holiday Monday.

CCTV images are being sought from security cameras at the Riverside Venue via the town council and contractors Pave Aways.

Stuart Owen from Open Newtown said:

“We’re hoping to have some CCTV imagery today, from Town Council and the Pave Aways Riverside development. We’re also seeking witnesses who saw or heard the damage / theft.

“We believe this all happened yesterday, Monday 2nd May. We’re trying to piece a timeline of when the glass was broken and when the bikes were stolen, which may not have been at the same time.

“If anyone has any information then we ask that they contact the Police on 101, crime reference 226 02/05/2022.”

“We won’t be deterred by mindless vandalism and theft. We’re more disappointed than angry. If anyone wanted to borrow a bike they only needed to ask.

“If the individuals are so desperate that they thought theft of bikes was their last resort, then that’s a sad reflection of society and their lives. These people do not represent our good town.”
