At the next full meeting of Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council, scheduled for the 23rd January 2023 at 6:30pm, councillors will discuss a nomination to award the position of honorary freeman or freewoman to a resident of the town.
However, due to data protection implications, this nomination will be discussed in private.
If the town councillors decide to proceed, then a special meeting will be called to award the title where two thirds of councillors have to decide to grant the honour.
Only 12 living people can hold the title and it is the highest honour a council can give to a person.
Currently only one honorary freeman exists, David Pugh, a local historian who died a few years ago and was awarded the honour posthumously.
