Proposals by Powys County Council to place more traffic restrictions in Newtown will be heard next week by the Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, Cllr Jackie Charlton.

The proposals, which include the addition of no waiting zones, no stopping zones, no loading zones and limited waiting areas are set to be introduced across the town.

The reasons for the proposals is due to the changes made to High Street, to introduce certain controls to address inconsiderate and obstructive parking and to address some of the issues identified by the Town Council and county councillors at Penygloddfa to improve safety of children.

Some of the proposed changes are:

  • No waiting at any time / no loading zone outside SPAR and at the rear to Social 23 / Argos.
  • No waiting at any time outside Newtown Kebab House.
  • Disabled only parking on Shortbridge Street opposite the Red Cross shop and disabled only parking on High Street outside Costa Coffee.
  • 1 hour only parking outside the Robert Owen Gardens on Shortbridge Street.
  • 1 hour only parking on High Street outside Boots.
  • Goods loading only on High Street outside Greggs and on Shortbridge Street outside The Lion pub.
  • Loading only on Market Street outside the Market Hall.
  • No waiting at any time opposite houses on Llanfair Road.
  • No waiting at any time and no stopping between 8am and 5pm outside Penygloddfa Primary School on School Lane.

The report states that Powys County Council has engaged with the Town Council and Dyfed Powys Police who have both raised no objections to the proposals. It also states that Cllr Joy Jones (Newtown East) and Cllr Peter Lewington (Newtown West), as the local county councillors for the affected areas are supportive of the proposals.

The full documents can be found by clicking here, which include a map and statement of reasons for the proposals.

If the proposals are signed off by the Cabinet Member then a consultation will be held on a proposed Traffic Regulation Order. If no substantive objections are recieved the Order will be made and come into force at a date to be decided by the County Council.
