'Bryn Teg', a garden in Newtown, has earned a spot on the shortlist for The English Garden's prestigious 'Nation's Favourite Garden' competition.

Competing against three other gardens from Wales & the Borders, Bryn Teg opened its doors to the public earlier this year through the National Garden Scheme.

Described by the National Garden Scheme (NGS) as a "jungly garden," Bryn Teg is the brainchild of owner Dolly Childs.

Inspired by her childhood in Jamaica, the garden features an array of exotic plants and lush foliage, including bananas, paulownia with enormous leaves, palms, ferns, and vibrant flowers like scarlet anthurium.

The garden's unique design and stunning appearance have caught the attention of garden enthusiasts across the region. Dolly Childs, the proud owner of Bryn Teg, shared her vision for the garden, saying, "I was born and grew up in Jamaica, West Indies, where I was surrounded by breathtaking landscapes filled with an abundance of wildlife, aromatic herbs, exotic spices, and a kaleidoscope of vibrant flowers. Recreating that sense of peace and tranquility became my mission, and I used my skills to transform the neglected front garden into a tropical paradise."

Featuring an impressive variety of plants arranged on multiple levels, the garden aims to transport visitors to another continent. Even in the rain, the experience of walking through Bryn Teg is reminiscent of a jungle adventure.
