In response to recent events at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, Newtown High School is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of its students and staff and will be holding a lockdown drill on Tuesday.
Following a letter from Acting Headteacher Mrs N Harvard, the school has announced a lockdown drill scheduled for Tuesday, 7th May 2024.
The decision to conduct this drill comes in the wake of a disturbing incident at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, where teachers Fiona Elias, Liz Hopkins, and a student were injured by a teenager wielding a bladed weapon.

In her letter to parents and carers, Mrs Harvard emphasised the school's existing policies and procedures designed to safeguard students and staff during unforeseen critical incidents. However, recognizing the need for continued vigilance and readiness, the school has opted to conduct a lockdown drill as an additional precautionary measure.
During the drill, staff will be unable to answer external calls and, to minimize disruption to students' learning, the drill has been scheduled to coincide with Learning Mentor Time. Students will be informed of the drill's arrangements and will have the opportunity to ask questions, ensuring their understanding and cooperation during the exercise.
Parents and carers are encouraged to reach out to the school with any questions or concerns they may have regarding the upcoming drill.
