We've crunched the numbers from Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) across Newtown to see how energy efficient our homes really are.

We are well and truly into Winter in Wales as the temperatures drop and our energy bills increase. One way in which we can save money and the environment is by ensuring our houses are the most efficient they can be.

In England and Wales, most properties have an Energy Performance Certificate, or EPC - which are all available for download via GOV.UK. Properties are rated between A and G for their energy performance.

We've examined over 4,000 certificates from Newtown and the surrounding SY16 area and can reveal some facts and figures...

Our research shows that properties in the Newtown area have an estimated energy use of over 1 million kilowatt hours per square metre. The certificates also indicate that as a whole, properties in the Newtown area spend around £4,514,177 each year on lighting, heating and hot water.

The data also reveals that the vast majority of properties are rated either C or D - which is above the average for England and Wales. The most common type of heating is mains gas and double glazing dominates with only 12 properties having single glazing.

CO2 emissions also indicate that combined, properties in the Newtown area pump out 19,570 tonnes annually. However, if all the 'recommendations' in the EPCs are followed, this could be reduced to 9,633 tonnes annually.
