Newtown residents and emergency services came together to rescue a woman from the River Severn on Sunday evening.

Dyfed Powys Police received a call regarding a concern for the welfare of a woman in the River Severn at around 7.35pm on Sunday 7th April 2024.

Thanks to the quick response of officers and the Fire Service, the woman was already on a nearby embankment when they arrived, having been brought to safety by a member of the public. The woman was then taken to the hospital with no immediate life-threatening injuries.

A spokesperson for Dyfed Powys Police thanked those who assisted in bringing the woman to safety, highlighting the bravery and quick thinking of the individuals involved.

Additionally, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Welshpool, Aberystwyth, Newtown, and Montgomery were called to the scene on Canal Road following reports of a casualty in the river.

Crews worked together to remove the woman from the river and administered first aid before handing her over to Ambulance Service personnel. The crews left the scene at 8.03pm.
