Storm Henk has unleashed its fury on Newtown, leaving a trail of flooding that has impacted several key roadways, causing significant disruptions for commuters and residents alike.
Local residents took to the North Powys Community Travel Alerts group on Facebook to share real-time updates on the worsening road conditions.
One of the severely affected areas is the A483 just outside Newtown, towards Welshpool, where the floodwaters have risen to the extent of submerging some vehicles' exhausts. The situation has resulted in single-lane traffic, and motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution in the area. Google Maps is showing traffic as red in this area.

Another problematic spot is the main road from Montgomery turning towards Newtown, where flooding has reduced traffic to a single file, and the water levels are reportedly increasing. Additionally, the bridge at Caerhowel has been declared impassable due to flooding, intensifying the challenges for those navigating this route.
Residents reported encountering flooding on both sides of Kerry, with a passable but precarious middle of the road. The situation is expected to worsen, and drivers are advised to proceed with caution. Further reports indicate extensive flooding between Kerry and the Abermule turnoff, highlighting the widespread impact of Storm Henk on the region's roadways.
The road from Tregynon to Newtown via Highgate is another cause for concern with the road now completely closed by Dyfed Powys Police.
The impact of Storm Henk extends beyond the roadways, with Transport for Wales (TfW) announcing cancellations to services between Welshpool and Newtown. The railway line has been blocked due to heavy rain flooding, affecting train services passing through these stations. Commuters are advised to check for updates and expect delays until at least 2:00 PM on January 2, 2024.
