The clash between Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council and Powys County Council over increased public car park charges in Powys has sparked deep concern among the former.

The Town Council, fully aware of the potential negative consequences for local businesses, residents, and tourism, is urging Powys County Council to reconsider its decision.

During a meeting on March 27th, 2023, Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council extensively deliberated on the issue of raising car parking prices. Considering the pressing need for support among town center businesses, the importance of private transportation for residents accessing town center services, and the potential impact on tourism, the Council reached a unanimous decision.

The Town Council of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn is calling on Powys County Council to carefully consider the concerns voiced by the local representative body and reevaluate their decision, taking into account the potential risks posed to town center businesses and the well-being of the community.

In response to the letter received from Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council, Powys County Council acknowledged the concerns raised. However, they emphasized the tremendous pressures they face in delivering and managing services under challenging circumstances. The decision to raise car parking charges was made as part of their efforts to establish a balanced budget for the fiscal year 2023-24.

While acknowledging the need to generate funds for maintaining and supporting facilities and services, Powys County Council aims to minimize increases in council tax for residents and address budgetary pressures. They highlight that car park revenue is just one aspect of their overall savings targets.
