Parents in Newtown and communities located along the Cambrian Railway are being urged to educate their children about the dangers of trespassing on the railway line.

British Transport Police (BTP) has issued an appeal following recent incidents of children playing on railway lines.

Superintendent Andrew Morgan of BTP Wales and Borders emphasized the importance of understanding the true risks associated with the railway.

He stated:

"Many young people see the railway as an exciting place, but it is quite the opposite. Those who work and operate within the network are highly skilled and undergo continuous training due to the dangerous nature of the environment. I urge all parents and carers to speak with their loved ones about this issue."

Superintendent Morgan also reminded the public that trespassing on the rail network is not only unsafe but also against the law. BTP will take legal action whenever possible.

To address the increase in incidents during the summer holiday period, BTP will enhance patrols, proactively searching for those who are breaking the law. Superintendent Morgan encouraged anyone who witnesses trespassing to report it by texting or calling BTP.

In emergency situations, individuals should dial 999 for immediate assistance.

Leyton Powell, Director of Safety, Sustainability and Risk at Transport for Wales, further emphasized the consequences of trespassing on railway lines.

Powell stated:

"There is never a reason to take such risks by trespassing. Not only is it illegal, but it can also result in severe injury or loss. Whether it is playing with friends, opting for a shortcut, or engaging in healthy exercise, such activities should never take place on or near a railway line. Trains can approach quickly and silently, and they must be treated with respect. When spending time with friends or if your children are going out for the day, please remind them to prioritize their safety."
