Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council has identified the need for urgent safety improvements in the junior area of the new town play park, requiring an estimated expenditure of at least £10,000.

Recent risk assessments conducted by the council on all play areas revealed a "medium risk" in a specific section of the town centre site due to significant ground erosion caused by heavy usage.

The recently published report, which was discussed by the Services Committee, highlights two areas within the junior area, specifically the tunnel and slide positions along the mound, as the primary focus for investment. These areas have suffered erosion due to extensive use, necessitating the replacement of the subsurface with a suitable cover.

In consultation with a specialist soft play surface contractor, it has been recommended to replace the eroded subsurface with appropriate cover. The proposed solution involves digging up the affected areas and laying a bonded 'Tigermulch' material as a protective surface. This measure aims to prevent any potential accidents or injuries resulting from the current hazardous conditions.

The Operations Manager emphasised the importance of addressing these safety concerns promptly. "The eroded areas pose a potential risk to the children using the park. By investing in the recommended safety measures, we can ensure that our community members, particularly the younger ones, can enjoy the park without any unnecessary hazards," stated the Operations Manager in the report.

The proposed bonded 'Tigermulch' material is known for its durability, impact absorption, and low maintenance requirements, making it an ideal choice for high-traffic play areas. Its installation would not only address the safety concerns but also extend the lifespan of the park's amenities, providing long-term benefits for the community.
